In some areas of Nassau, voting will not go on as normal, said Democrat Elections Commissioner William Biamonte.

“Long Beach, Island Park and Woodmere are dead in the water with no chance of getting power by Tuesday,” he said. “So we’re looking at moving away from usual sites and going to a ‘super site’ that combines 10 or 11 polling places in one.”

He said details are still being hashed out, but in Long Beach officials are considering setting up voting at Nickerson Park, the Malibu Beach Club or some other locale on the East End. “We’ll have tents, generators, lights, sort of like a military operation,” Biamonte said.

He wasn’t sure where such “super sites” would be in Woodmere or Island Park. State and local officials are slated to huddle again Friday.

Mangano Announces Food & Drink Distributions

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that on the County, FEMA, Island Harvest and the Red Cross began distributing food and drinks to thousands of residents impacted by the damage related to Hurricane Sandy.

County Executive Mangano stated, “Hurricane Sandy has deprived many of us of the most essential things in life—food, water and shelter. We are cooperating with multiple federal, state and local agencies and not-for-profits to deliver these essentials to our neighbors.”

ISLAND HARVEST FOOD DISTRIBUTION TODAY

Island Harvest will distribute up to 20,000 sandwiches and drinks today to residents on the streets of the following neighborhoods today through a Mobile Distribution Center:
•   Freeport
•   Island Park
•   Massapequa
•   Seaford

RED CROSS FOOD DISTRIBUTION

The Red Cross has opened a number of Mobile Meals distribution centers Nassau County Locations are open from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Meals, water, and comfort kits will be distributed at the following locations.
•   Cedar Creek Park in Seaford – Merrick Road east of Wantagh Avenue
•   Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach – 880 Lido Boulevard

This is the last week of our campaign to take back the Country but right now my focus is seeing to clean up and restoration of services to our beloved community which is suffering in the aftermath of this historic and terrible storm.

Our waterfront communities have been completely devastated, power remains out for millions and there are many public safety concerns and issues with clearing debris, downed powerlines, water quality and supply and the dangers posed by damaged cars and structures.  

Many of our citizens are in shelters and as the days pass and power is not restored the risk of injury to our house bound and elderly neighbors increases.  

Fortunately, New Yorkers are extremely resilient and our community ties are so strong that we will all come together to do what needs to be done to clean and clear our neighborhoods, restore power and services, and care for those in need.

I have visited several shelters yesterday and today and my heart is lifted by how many are ready to lend a hand to help their neighbors.   We pray that God gives us continued strength and patience to endure these challenging times.
